Our Big, Big God

How often do we try to put our BIG “G” God into a little “g” box? How often do we pray for something but don’t really have the confidence that God can work miracles? Or even more so, how often do we fail to bring something before God because we have lost hope or think it is impossible?

I know that I have often done this without even realizing I am, but God reminds us over and over again through his miracles and fulfilled prophesy’s in his word just how powerful He was and STILL IS! Just one example that I love is in the book of Joshua. The Lord appointed Joshua after the death of Moses to lead the Israelites across the Jordan River into the Land the Lord had promised them. The Lord promised Joshua just as he had promised Moses that he would not fail him or abandon him, and we see a repetition of this throughout scripture, and especially in the book of Joshua, where the Lord reminds Joshua and his people to “Be Strong and Courageous” and “I will be with you wherever you go.” (See Joshua 1:5-9.) Joshua uses this spoken word from the Lord to also encourage the Israelites in Chapter 10 vs. 25. I just LOVE how Joshua is an example of using the word of God to encourage others and to show how much faith and trust he has in the Lord. Do you have this same faith and trust in our God?

Let’s get back to the story, so the Israelites are actually going to cross over the Jordan River and Joshua tells the Israelites, “The priests will carry the Ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth. As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall.” Um, wow!! It goes on to explain how it was a harvest season and the river was overflowing. How many Israelites do you think doubted that this would really happen?? I mean honestly if I was in their shoes, I may have had an “okay, show me” attitude. But it gets even better!! Not only was the Lords promise fulfilled BUT check out the detail to the end, “as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam and the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the RIVERBED WAS DRY.” (emphasis added) Holy cow!!! Can you imagine??? Not only did the water part, but they crossed on DRY LAND!! Land that was just seconds before covered by an overflowing river of water was DRY! Land that one would think would at least be muddy muck was DRY! Our God is miraculous and this reminds me that he is not only powerful, but he is a God of detail. He does not miss any details when he is fulfilling his purpose!

God’s word is full of miracles he performed throughout the old testament and the new testament, and especially through his son Jesus. Jesus’ life started as a miracle, being born of a virgin and his life continued to leave others in awe. During this season where we are looking forward to celebrating the birth of our Savior, I want us to remember how BIG our God is and how much he cares for his children.Dig into his word and be reminded of the many miracles he performed, and use this as a reminder that He is with you wherever you go and there is nothing too small or too big to lift up to him. He is still at work, completing his story until his son Jesus will come again!
