Making Taco Night Healthy
Taco night is a family favorite in our house! Here are a few of my tips to make taco night healthy and still delicious for everyone, even the kiddos!
1. Say NO to seasoning packets! They are loaded with way too much sodium! Instead season your meat yourself. This is what I use...chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, and a touch of pink Himalayan salt! Super easy! I honestly just sprinkle to my desired taste and go super easy on the salt! <3
2. Buy grass fed, no hormone/antibiotic, non gmo ground beef or turkey and make sure its extra lean!
3. Cheese...now this is super important bc its SO easy to go crazy with cheese on taco night! So here is my secret, I sprinkle about a tbsp of shredded cheese into the taco shells before I stick them in the oven. Serving the shells with the cheese already melted in make them taste cheesier, and keeps everyone from adding more cheese! Once I have done this, I stick the cheese back in the fridge to avoid the temptation!
4. Use corn tortillas, hard or soft is fine! Stay away from flour tortillas.
5. Instead of sour cream, we use plain greek yogurt (0% or 2% is fine). It tastes just the same and is loaded with protein!
6. Load your "taco bar" with fresh ingredients for toppings! Some of our favorites...chopped spinach, chopped spring mix, diced peppers, tomatoes, avocado, and salsa! Homemade salsa is always best, but if you get store bought, get the fresh salsa from the deli section!
